...if you had a $30K budget? Rules are: must be a model not sold in the US (euro spec versions of USDM vehicles disqualified- sorry e36 M3), must be older than 25 years so it can be legally registered and driven, and must be LEFT hand drive, because some of us go to ATMs and drive-thru windows every now and then.

E28 M535i, unless you could get the E28 M5 for under 30k.

I’d put a down payment on this ;)

Nvm, just saw that you said it must be LHD. Boo.
![]() 09/13/2016 at 11:07 |

Your LHD requirement kills all the cool 80s and early 90s JDM cars. ATMs and drive thrus can be handled with one of these .

can a TVR Griffith be had for sub $30k? Because that sounds like a winner
![]() 09/13/2016 at 11:20 |

we got the base wagon/sedan version though - does this still qualify?
![]() 09/13/2016 at 11:21 |

the idea is to import a cool european or south american model. Pull up to cars and coffee in a classic Opel Manta and have everyone try to guess what it is.
![]() 09/13/2016 at 11:21 |

This is an RS2 avant. I don’t think we ever got the 2 here.

the only valid options with these limitations are all Italian or French, mostly Alfa Romeos and Lancias, with a few Peugeots and Citroens for good measure.
(in a year)
(careful shopping required for <$30K)
![]() 09/13/2016 at 11:35 |

I reject your rules and still say Euro-spec E36 M3 since its the one car I legitimately see myself importing when the time comes.
![]() 09/13/2016 at 11:39 |

never got the 2, so it’s allowed

look to south america. Lots of interesting SUVs and trucks that don’t come to the US

interesting SUVs and trucks
This word pairing is completely oxymoronic unless discussing current generation Ford Rangers, VW Amoraks or vintage Mitsubishi Pajeros, oh, wait those Pajeros are all RHD...
/the opinions stated in this reply are solely those of JawzX2, Boost Addict and do no necessarily reflect those of the Oppo community as a whole
EDIT: I will accept that this is an option...

I’d get an mk3 Ford Capri 2.8.
![]() 09/13/2016 at 12:02 |

The RS2 Avant is based on the Audi 80 Avant. Which we did get. Just want to make sure! Because I wanted one of these since my Audi 80 days
BUT after a google search, this was made 1994-1995, which makes it 22 years old :(

If maximum WTF is the goal, either an Argentinian Falcon:
Or an Argentinian double-cab Chevy pickup:
If we are talking about cars I’d want to own & drive:
![]() 09/13/2016 at 12:18 |

I like your picks.
They’re all cars I own, owned, considered buying (including communication with a seller) or test drove within the last 2.5 years. This includes a Lada (not a Niva), but not the Alfa. Come one over and have a spin.

Did you guys really get the 80 Avant?
![]() 09/13/2016 at 12:28 |

so, for the 155Q4, just imagine a Delta Integrale with Alfa styling no hatch. I do wish I could bet my hands on a BX GTi/16V, but I promised myself I’d get a Traction Avant before any modern Citroens...
I would also add the 33 1.7 16V to the list...

as far as I know yes, lady I used to work with had one while I had my b4 cabriolet. I tried to buy it off her. She wasn’t having it
![]() 09/13/2016 at 12:35 |

The BX was introduced 34 years ago. That’s prehistoric (I’m 33). Is that still modern? I owned a BX last year (a diesel) and will admit it is certainly more modern than a Traction Avant.
What’s your opinion about
buying
a Lancia turbo as an engine donor for a Peugeot 205 CTi?
![]() 09/13/2016 at 12:36 |

A mint Dolo Sprint.
![]() 09/13/2016 at 12:41 |

modern Citroen = fuel injected, 12v electrical system, Hydropneumatic.
hmmm, I don’t know if I would sacrifice the Lancia for the CTi... can you cram the engine out of one of these into that little Pug?

Wartburg 353 Trans.
Because an East German longitudinally mounted, front-engine FWD 1.0 3-cylinder 2-stroke with a column shifted 4-speed, based on a pre-war DKW design (it’s an extremely close relative to the DKW F9, which became... most Auto Union models until the early 1960s, and the platform was a direct predecessor of the Audi B platform today) isn’t weird enough, it needs to be the pickup version, too.
Wartburg 311 or I think 312 Schnelltransporter will work as well (older version of the same thing, the 312 has the updated chassis that the 353 used).

RS6 Avant with the V10 and a manual.
/winning

The Lancia is halfway disassembled already. It’s a minivan and a Lancia in name (and alcantara seats) only. So there’s no stopping this now. Besides, it slots into the 205 while using OEM parts like engine mounts, as the 2.0 turbo is from the same family as the 205 CTi/GTi engines. That Fiat engine would need a lot of custom work.
You can get a BX with carbs though. The mk1 BX Sport with the dual twin barrel carbs would be the best pick imho.
![]() 09/13/2016 at 13:28 |
|
Lancia Zeta? 8-valve turbo? OK, that sounds fun.
I didn’t realize the BX came carb’ed... still, I really want a Traction... actually I really want a Traction like these...
this is kinda awesome too...
I would settle for a not-rusty 11 though...

find one more than 25 years old. or first import it to canada and register it there, then import it through washington and convince them that it is “significantly similar” to a US model (like an A6 avant) and see if they’ll let you bring it in.
but i consider this a euro spec of a US car, so it’s disqualified.

1200+ E28 M5s were produced for the us market.

I wasn't fully paying attention to that little detail, the e28 m535i was never imported here, so I stand by that one
